My health journey
Health has always felt like a thread woven through my story — sometimes strong and steady, and other times fraying at the edges. But it wasn’t until a series of life-altering moments that I realized just how important it was to start prioritizing my own well-being and start truly listening to my body.
In 2017, my dad was diagnosed with stage-4 colon cancer.
Just 9-months later, at only 55 years old, he went to be with Jesus.
Walking through his illness and passing changed me. It opened my eyes to how fragile health can be and how easily we take it for granted until it’s too late.
Around that same time, we learned that Keith, my husband, had celiac disease. Overnight, we had to change everything about how we ate. It was a steep learning curve, one we didn’t have the luxury of easing into, because we knew the risks of ignoring it. Gluten-free became our new normal, but in many ways, it was also the beginning of my deeper dive into understanding the power food has over our health.
Fast forward to 2021 — we made the leap to start our ranch. That year was pure chaos. We lived out of suitcases while traveling back and forth across the state, chasing a dream that pushed our health to the limit.
We were still gluten free, but convenience foods, stress, and lack of sleep took a toll on all of us. By October, we finally moved to the ranch full time, grateful to begin settling into a rhythm.
After moving in, I started to experience more extreme symptoms that I previously was just turning a blind-eye to.
We had a suspicion that there might be mold in our primary bathroom and no amount of deep cleaning was remediating the situation.
But there were other "priorities" on the to-do list, so that project fell to the wayside.
Then came March of 2023. Fatigue that no amount of coffee could fix, heart-flutters, brain fog, breakouts, bloating, insomnia… I felt like I was slowly unraveling. I didn't recognize myself anymore.
The wake-up call that I needed finally came.
I was out checking water troughs and I still am not quite certain of the events that took place, but I found myself standing in the middle of the water; fully clothed, boots completely full of water. I had fainted and fell backwards into a water trough.
I’ll never forget sloshing home with water in my boots, seeing the look on Keith’s face, and realizing: I couldn’t keep brushing this off. Something had to change.
He ended up taking me to our small town urgent care which was adjacent to an emergency room. I didn't want to go into the ER simply because it didn't feel "life threatening."
I tried to check-in with the front desk, but as soon as they heard "heart flutters", he directed me to go next door.
As I walked into the ER and re-explained some of my symptoms, the lady behind the counter grabbed her microphone and shouted "code blue." Before I knew it, I was being scooped up in a wheel chair and rushed to the back room for examination.
After being hooked up to so many machines, the ER ruled out anything immediate and referred me to see a general practitioner.
At that follow-up appointment she said, “It’s probably just anxiety,” I knew deep down there was more to it and I wasn't going to settle for a "quick fix."
That’s when I began working with a naturopath and later a functional medicine doctor. Through testing, we uncovered food sensitivities (no gluten for me either), high inflammation, and even mold in my system.
This led to prioritizing the bathroom which we did end up discovering mold. It was a journey of peeling back layers, one test at a time, and slowly piecing together the root causes of my health struggles.
The last couple of years have been about rebuilding. I’ve focused heavily on gut health, lowering inflammation, eating gluten free, moving my body, and reducing toxins where I can. It hasn’t been perfect — but it’s been progress.
This journey has led me to value putting the work and time into my body. I’ve found supplements that support my energy, digestion, and overall wellness, and I’ve seen firsthand how they’ve helped me stay consistent in caring for myself.
My story is like so many others — it’s still being written, still evolving. And my hope is to share it not just as inspiration, but as an invitation. If you’re here for better health, for a chance to build something meaningful, or maybe both, I’d love to walk alongside you.
Because no matter where you are starting from, you don’t have to do it alone.
Let's work on our heath together
